What is Family Therapy?
The family is a system of interactions between mother, father and children. Family members and their relationships with each other constitute the components of the family system. As in every system, there is stasis and order in the family.
The family has a tendency to stay in balance, to create a consistent way of life. The family is in a constant state of change; what was once considered functional and healthy may not be considered healthy in another period.
The Couple and Family Therapy approach is a mental health discipline based on the theory that psychological problems occur within relationships and stem from problematic patterns of interaction. It is also known as “marriage and family therapy”, “family counseling” and “systemic therapy”.
Scientific research showing that psychological problems can be effectively treated within relationships has led to Couple and Family Therapy becoming a widespread discipline in many countries around the world.
The family therapy approach is based on the view that individuals do not live in isolation, but in a social context, and therefore, in order to understand individuals, it is necessary to examine their interactions with others and the environment in which they live. In the system, each individual is affected by and influences the others, so the cause of the problem is not attributed to individual family members, the problem is the interpersonal relationships, the behavior of each party is sustained by the behavior of the other. According to this approach, there is no cause and effect relationship, there is mutual influence.
Trained in psychotherapy and family systems, couple and family therapists examine their clients’ problems, symptoms and patterns of interaction. Couple and family therapists work with individuals, couples, families and groups. No matter who the client is, or what the problem is, they look at the problem from a relational perspective and develop their treatment by involving the family system.
